Physical quality of a yellow latossol under integrated crop-livestock system Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Araújo,Fernando Silva; Salviano,Adeodato Ari Cavalcante; Leite,Luiz Fernando Carvalho; Souza,Zigomar Menezes de; Sousa,Allan Charlles Mendes de.
Soil physical quality is essential to global sustainability of agroecosystems, once it is related to processes that are essential to agricultural crop development. This study aimed to evaluate physical attributes of a Yellow Latossol under different management systems in the savanna area in the state of Piaui. This study was developed in Uruçuí southwest of the state of Piauí. Three systems of soil management were studied: an area under conventional tillage (CT) with disk plowi and heavy harrow and soybean crop; an area under no-tillage with soybean-maize rotation and millet as cover crop (NT + M); two areas under Integrated Crop-Livestock System, with five-month pasture grazing and soybean cultivation and then continuous pasture grazing (ICL + S and ICL +...

Pine Harvest Impact on Soil Structure of a Dystric Cambisol (Humic) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Costa,Adriano da; Albuquerque,Jackson Adriano; Costa,André da; Warmling,Maria Tereza; Magro,Bruno Afonso.
ABSTRACT Traffic of heavy machinery at harvest and log extraction causes structural degradation of the soil, but studies on the effects of forest harvesting on soils with high organic matter content and exchangeable Al are scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of mechanized forest harvesting operations on a Dystric Cambisol (Humic) with high organic matter (more 50 g kg1) content and exchangeable Al (more 6,0 cmolc kg-1), reforested with Pinus taeda L. The evaluated harvesting system were the whole-tree, in which the feller-buncher cuts and lays the trees down in bundles; the skidder drags the tree bundles up near a road; and the harvester delimbs and cuts the trees into short logs, stacking them on the roadside to be loaded onto...

Prediction of soil shear strength in agricultural and natural environments of the Brazilian Cerrado PAB
Silva,Reginaldo Barboza da; Dias Junior,Moacir de Souza; Iori,Piero; Silva,Francisca Alcivânia de Melo; Folle,Sergio Mauro; Franz,Claudio Alberto Bento; Souza,Zigomar Menezes de.
The objective of this work was to develop uni- and multivariate models to predict maximum soil shear strength (τmax) under different normal stresses (σn), water contents (U), and soil managements. The study was carried out in a Rhodic Haplustox under Cerrado (control area) and under no-tillage and conventional tillage systems. Undisturbed soil samples were taken in the 0.00-0.05 m layer and subjected to increasing U and σn, in shear strength tests. The uni- and multivariate models - respectively τmax=10(a+bU) and τmax=10(a+bU+cσn) - were significant in all three soil management systems evaluated and they satisfactorily explain the relationship between U, σn, and τmax. The soil under Cerrado has the highest shear strength (τ) estimated with the univariate...

Prototype for soil mechanical resistance measurement with chisel plow automated control REA
MACHADO,THIAGO M.; LANÇAS,KLÉBER P..
ABSTRACT In Brazil, there are several available models and systems to measure soil compaction; however, the data generated by such equipment have to be processed and interpreted, making the process expensive. Our study aimed to evaluate a prototype of instrumented rods to identify soil compacted layers and control chiseling depth, and compared it to a conventional system at a fixed depth of 0.35 m. In order to compare them, we assessed the following parameters: hourly fuel consumption, operational fuel consumption, drawbar power, average power, average speed, slipping, tractor effective field capacity and response time. Our results showed that mechanical chiseling at variable depths reduced in 26% the operational fuel consumption and increased in 14% the...

RECOVERY OF AN OXISOL DEGRADED BY THE CONSTRUCTION OF A HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Carvalho,Joseane Carina Borges de; Espindola,Carlos Roberto; Alves,Marlene Cristina; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Dechen,Sonia Carmela Falci.
ABSTRACT The removal of thick layers of soil under native scrubland (Cerrado) on the right bank of the Paraná River in Selvíria (State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) for construction of the Ilha Solteira Hydroelectric Power Plant caused environmental damage, affecting the revegetation process of the stripped soil. Over the years, various kinds of land use and management systems have been tried, and the aim of this study was to assess the effects of these attempts to restore the structural quality of the soil. The experiment was conducted considering five treatments and thirty replications. The following treatments were applied: stripped soil without anthropic intervention and total absence of plant cover; stripped soil treated with sewage sludge and...

RESISTANCE OF A RED LATOSOL TO PENETRATION: COMPARISON OF PENETROMETERS, MODEL ADJUSTMENT, AND SOIL WATER CONTENT CORRECTION REA
Duarte,Thiago F.; Silva,Tonny J. A. da; Bonfim-Silva,Edna M.; Fenner,Willian.
ABSTRACT Penetration resistance can be determined directly in the field or in the laboratory. However, data obtained using the two methods are not directly comparable. Considering soil moisture influences penetration resistance, penetration resistance data obtained using the two methods can be corrected based on common moisture values. To enable comparison of the data, the measured data should be adjusted using mathematical models. Consequently, the objective of the present study was to compare soil penetration resistance values measured in a Red Latosol using a static penetrometer and a bench-top electronic penetrometer. The comparison was carried out using samples collected from different soil layers, based on moisture levels ranging from 0.15 to 0.28 kg...

Root abundance of maize in conventionally-tilled and zero-tilled soils of Argentina Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Taboada,Miguel Angel; Alvarez,Carina Rosa.
Maize root growth is negatively affected by compacted layers in the surface (e.g. agricultural traffic) and subsoil layers (e.g. claypans). Both kinds of soil mechanical impedances often coexist in maize fields, but the combined effects on root growth have seldom been studied. Soil physical properties and maize root abundance were determined in three different soils of the Rolling Pampa of Argentina, in conventionally-tilled (CT) and zero-tilled (ZT) fields cultivated with maize. In the soil with a light Bt horizon (loamy Typic Argiudoll, Chivilcoy site), induced plough pans were detected in CT plots at a depth of 0-0.12 m through significant increases in bulk density (1.15 to 1.27 Mg m-3) and cone (tip angle of 60 º) penetrometer resistance (7.18 to 9.37...

Soil bulk density and biomass partitioning of Brachiaria decumbens in a silvopastoral system Scientia Agricola
Paciullo,Domingos Sávio Campos; Castro,Carlos Renato Tavares de; Gomide,Carlos Augusto de Miranda; Fernandes,Priscila Beligoli; Rocha,Wadson Sebastião Duarte da; Müller,Marcelo Dias; Rossiello,Roberto Oscar Pereyra.
Shade in silvopastoral systems improves the thermal comfort of animals, but it may also affect the pasture productivity and can contribute to soil compaction in the shaded areas due to the increase in the number of animals looking for comfort. The effect of grazing at various distances from tree rows (under the tree canopy, at 6 and at 12 m away from the trees) on the soil bulk density and on the aerial and root biomass of Brachiaria decumbens was evaluated in both the dry and the rainy seasons. The study was carried out on an Orthic Ferralsol in a randomized block design with two replications. Tree rows were composed of Eucalyptus grandis and Acacia mangium species, and the paddocks were submitted to a rotational stocking management, using Holstein (Bos...

Soil penetration resistance in a rhodic eutrudox affected by machinery traffic and soil water content REA
Moraes,Moacir T. de; Debiasi,Henrique; Franchini,Julio C.; Silva,Vanderlei R. da.
Soil compaction caused by machinery traffic reduces crop yields. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of intensive traffic, and the soil water content, on the soil penetration resistance (PR) of a Rhodic Eutrudox (Distroferric Red Latosol, Brazilian Classification), managed under no-tillage (NT). The experiment consisted of six treatments: NT with recent chiseling, NT without additional compaction, and NT with additional compaction by 4, 8, 10 and 20 passes of a harvester with a weight of 100 kN (70 kN on the front axle). Undisturbed soil samples were collected at 5.5-10.5 cm and 13.5-18.5 cm depth to quantify the soil bulk density (BD). The PR was assessed in four periods, using an impact penetrometer, inserted in the soil to a depth of 46 cm. The...

Soil penetration resistance mapping quality: effect of the number of subsamples Agronomy
Pias, Osmar Henrique de Castro; Cherubin, Maurício Roberto; Basso, Claudir José; Santi, Antônio Luis; Molin, José Paulo; Bayer, Cimélio.
There is no consensus in the literature regarding how many subsamples are needed to perform accurate on-farm soil penetration resistance (SPR) mapping. Therefore, the objective of this study was to define the number of subsamples per sampling point needed to quantify the SPR. The experiment was performed in a 4.7 ha area and employed a 50 × 50 m grid system (18 sampling points). The SPR was evaluated using a digital penetrometer in two different years with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12, and 15 subsamples per sampling point. The SPR maps produced with increasing numbers of subsamples were compared to the reference maps (15 subsamples) using the relative deviation coefficient and Pearson´s linear correlation. A reduction in the number of subsamples promoted an...

Soil physical and biological properties in an integrated crop-livestock system in the Brazilian Cerrado PAB
Bonetti,João de Andrade; Paulino,Helder Barbosa; Souza,Edicarlos Damacena de; Carneiro,Marco Aurélio Carbone; Caetano,Jeander Oliveira.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the soil physical and biological properties in an integrated crop-livestock system (ICLS), with or without cattle grazing, in different seasons. The experiment was carried out in the Cerrado biome, in Brazil, in a Rhodic Eutrudox. The treatments consisted of grazing areas (Urochloa ruziziensis) at 0.25, 0.35, and 0.45 m heights (with soybean cultivation after grazing) and of nongrazed areas. The ICLS had no negative effects on soil bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, and microporosity. After ICLS implementation, the values of soil bulk density decreased, and those of soil macroporosity increased, in the grazed and nongrazed areas. However, after three years, bulk density and macroporosity were...

Soil physical attributes in integrated bean and sheep system under nitrogen levels Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Andreolla,Veruschka Rocha Medeiros; Moraes,Aníbal de; Bonini,Andreia Kusumota; Deiss,Leonardo; Sandini,Itacir Eloi.
Integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS) can promote higher grain and meat/milk yield as well as reduce soil degradation risks. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of grazing sheep with moderate intensity and nitrogen doses on soil physical attributes, and bean crop yield (Phaseolus vulgaris Lam.) under rotation with summer corn crop (Zea mays Lam.) and winter pasture with oats (Avena sativa Lam) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) The experimental design was completely randomized blocks with split-plot; the plots were nitrogen doses and the split-plots were grazing presence or absence. The treatments were nitrogen doses of 0, 75, 150 and 225 kg ha-1 applied on ryegrass and white oat pasture in winter followed by bean crop. Soil density,...

Soil resistance to penetration in cotton rows and interrows AGRIAMBI
Baio,Fábio H. R.; Scarpin,Igor M.; Roque,Cassiano G.; Neves,Danilo C..
ABSTRACT The soil physical quality is one of the most determinant factors for the development of any crop. This study aimed to assess the sample representativeness in soil resistance to penetration mappings taken in rows and interrows of the cotton crop, under two soil moisture conditions. Thirty control points were sampled in a cotton field of 91 ha. Soil resistance to penetration and soil moisture were measured at these georeferenced points. Regardless of soil moisture, the sampling position of soil resistance to penetration is indifferent (row, interrow, or in both positions) when the analysed depth is greater than 0.20 m in the cotton crop. The decrease of soil moisture causes the increment of soil resistance to penetration, regardless of the sampling...

Soil shear strength under non-irrigated and irrigated short duration grazing systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Carvalho,Rita de Cássia Ribeiro; Rocha,Wellington Willian; Pinto,José Cardoso; Pires,Bruno da Silva; Dias Junior,Moacir de Souza; Nunes,Ayeska Hubner Braga.
Pasture productivity can drop due to soil compaction caused by animal trampling. Physical and mechanical alterations are therefore extremely important indicators for pasture management. The objective of this research was to: draw and evaluate the Mohr failure line of a Red Yellow Latossol under different pasture cycles and natural forest; calculate apparent cohesion; observe possible physical alterations in this soil; and propose a correction factor for stocking rates based on shear strength properties. This study was conducted between March/2006 and March/2007 on the Experimental Farm of Fundação de Ensino Superior de Passos, in Passos, state of Minas Gerais. The total study area covered 6 ha, of which 2 ha were irrigated pasture, 2 ha non-irrigated...

Soil structural quality degradation by the increase in grazing intensity in integrated crop-livestock system Bragantia
Auler,André Carlos; Galetto,Shivelly Los; Hennipman,Fabrício Siqueira; Guntzel,Eduardo Daniel; Giarola,Neyde Fabíola; Fonseca,Adriel Ferreira da.
ABSTRACT The intensification of soil use, as in integrated croplivestock system (ICLS), might promote soil structural degradation. A field method to evaluate the soil structural quality is the Visual Evaluation of Soil Structure (VESS). Studies on the application of this method to ICLS are few. This work aimed to evaluate the structural quality of a Dystrudept under ICLS and different grazing intensities through VESS. Thus, the soil structure was evaluated in light grazing (LG) and heavy grazing (HG) in comparison to a neighboring native forest (NF) as reference area. After the grazing period, 10 trenches were dug in each area to collect soil monoliths. The identification of structural differences and the attribution of visual scores were carried out...

Soil water retention and s index after crop rotation and chiseling Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Calonego,Juliano Carlos; Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
Soil compaction can be minimized either mechanically or biologically, using plant species with vigorous root systems. An experiment was carried out with soybean (Glycine max) in rotation with triticale (X Triticosecale) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) in fall-winter associated with pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) or sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) in spring. Crop rotation under no-till was compared with mechanical chiseling. The experiment was carried out in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. Soil quality was estimated using the S index and soil water retention curves (in the layers of 0-0.05, 0.075-0.125, 0.15-0.20, 0.275-0.325, and 0.475-0.525 m deep). Crop rotation and chiseling improved soil quality, increasing the S...

Arcoverde,Sálvio N. S.; Souza,Cristiano M. A. de; Rafull,Leidy Z. L.; Cortez,Jorge W.; Orlando,Roberto C..
ABSTRACT Machinery traffic intensification has been recurrent in intensive agriculture in annual crops, which may lead to structural soil degradation and, consequently, a reduction of its productive capacity. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the influence of tractor traffic intensification on soil physical attributes and soybean yield components. The study was performed in an Oxisol under no-tillage for 10 years, using a randomized block design with five tractor traffic intensities (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 passes) and five replications. Density, porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, and penetration resistance were assessed in the soil and stem diameter, number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, grain weight per plant, thousand-grain weight,...
